Vulcano

Vulcano is the southernmost of the Aeolian Islands and a popular destination for beach lovers in the bays of Porto Levante and Porto Potente. Especially the hot fumaroles, which not only heat up the sea water in some places, but also make a freely accessible thermal operation possible with the hot water and fango pool of the Acqua del Bagno, offer therapeutic effects. In this lake below the crater you can take mud baths against rheumatism, arthrosis and skin diseases, which were already used by the Romans for healing purposes.

The springs are dominated by the Gran Cratere, the main crater of the volcano, which can be reached via a well-marked hiking trail. Flags of unpleasant sulphur smoke indicate that it is resting, but that inside it is still an active volcano that can erupt again and again. One of the most beautiful places on Vulcano is the Piscina di Venere, a basin with turquoise water surrounded by black rocks, where the deep cave Grotta del Cavallo is located. According to Greek mythology, the forge of the god Hephaistos is located here.

Inside the island, towards Piano, there is a panoramic road on the plateau. The lighthouse of Gelso in the very south offers a magnificent view of the north coast of Sicily, behind it like a wall the mountain range of the Nebrodi, over which the broad summit of Mount Etna rises.
