Between Montalbano Elicona and Mount Etna lies the Argimusco plateau, with striking rock formations of quartz sandstone, the megaliths of Argimusco. The plateau sits above 1,000 meters (1,140 to 1,200 meters, depending on the source) in the border area between the Nebrodi and Peloritani mountains, at the edge of the Bosco di Malabotta forest. Because of its resemblance to the English monument it is also called the “Sicilian Stonehenge”.

Were the megaliths built by people?

Local tradition regards the rocks as prehistoric megaliths, that is dolmens and menhirs. Geologically they are erosion forms shaped by wind and rain over a very long time. No archaeological evidence of prehistoric settlement, such as pottery, tools or bones, has been found. Some researchers suggest that the place was used for astronomical observation. That is a conjecture, not proof.

Which rock formations are there?

Several rocks have names that go back to their shape:

  • the Orante, the “Praying Woman”, about 25 meters high, with a feminine profile and joined hands, facing north towards the sea and the Aeolian Islands
  • the Eagle, which seems to look at Etna
  • the Monk
  • the Male Face

The plateau belongs to the municipalities of Montalbano Elicona, Tripi and Roccella Valdemone. The Tyrrhenian Sea lies on one side and the Alcantara valley on the other. The Bosco di Malabotta forest at the edge of the plateau is protected and has centuries-old oaks. From Montalbano Elicona the plateau can also be reached on hiking trails and mountain-bike routes.

What can you see from the plateau?

In clear weather the view takes in Mount Etna, the Rocca Salvatesta, the Montagna di Vernà, Capo di Milazzo, Capo Tindari and Capo Calavà, as far as the Aeolian Islands. For nature lovers and hikers the plateau is a quiet place.

Sturdy shoes, some provisions and water are sensible for a visit. In the off-season it can be cool and foggy.
