Saline di Trapani
The nature reserve Saline di Trapani e Paceco lies on the west coast of Sicily between Trapani and Paceco and covers more than 900 hectares. It was established in 1995 and is managed by WWF Italy. Sea salt is still produced in the salt pans, and migratory birds stop here at the same time. A museum tells the story of salt production.
What is there to see in the Trapani salt pans?
The landscape consists of evaporation ponds, heaps of salt, canals and windmills from the 15th and 16th centuries. Wind, sun and sea evaporate the seawater until the salt crystallises. Since April 2011 Trapani sea salt has carried the protected geographical indication IGP. The area is a Ramsar wetland and belongs to the European protected sites (SCI and SPA).
Which animals and plants live in the reserve?
More than 200 bird species have been recorded, using the area on migration, in winter or for breeding. Flamingos are regular visitors, most often in spring. Avocets, spoonbills, egrets and marsh harriers also occur. The brine shrimp Artemia salina lives in the salty water and can survive only in saline waters. Plants include glassworts, the salt-tolerant Calendula maritima and the Maltese mushroom (Cynomorium coccineum).
What does the Museo del Sale show?
The Museo del Sale is in the Mulino Maria Stella windmill, which also houses the WWF visitor center. It shows how salt was produced in the region and which techniques were used. Opening hours change with the season, and WWF publishes the current times.
How can you visit the reserve?
The reserve belongs to the municipalities of Trapani, Paceco and Misiliscemi. Salt ponds and mills line the “Via del Sale” between Trapani and Marsala. According to WWF, guided visits take place on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and must be booked in advance. Anyone who wants to watch birds should bring binoculars and sun protection, because there is little shade between the ponds.
