La Guardiola

La Guardiola is a viewpoint at 380 meters, on the edge of the historic center of Piraino in the province of Messina. From here the view runs across the Tyrrhenian Sea between Capo d'Orlando and Capo Calavà to the Aeolian Islands.

What can you see from La Guardiola?

The view covers a long stretch of coast below Piraino and the open sea. In clear weather Alicudi, Filicudi, Salina, Lipari, Vulcano and Panarea can be taken in at a glance, and from here they look close. Inland lies the Sant'Angelo valley, with the Nebrodi mountains behind it. The terrace is plain, edged by a white balustrade.

What is the history of La Guardiola?

In the 16th century a small fortress stood here and served as a lookout post. After it was pulled down the place became a belvedere. In the fascist era a monumental entrance with a three-arched portico was added, and later removed. A cannon was part of the site too: it was fired first in emergencies and later only on feast days.

What is there to see in Piraino?

Piraino sits on a ridge between the headlands of Capo d'Orlando and Capo Calavà at about 416 meters. The village has largely kept its medieval layout. Sights include the Torre Saracena, a defensive tower that was turned into a prison around 1500 and restored in 1978, the Chiesa Madre, completed in 1585, and the Palazzo Ducale, the former residence of the dukes.

How do you plan a visit?

The viewpoint can be reached on foot and by car and lies on Via Belvedere. Because it sits high above the sea it makes a natural stop on a drive along the north coast, for example between Capo d'Orlando and Messina. Anyone staying longer can combine it with a walk through the center of Piraino. Its patron saint is San Giuseppe, whose feast is held on the first Tuesday after Easter.
