Valley of the Temples
The archaeological sites of Agrigento, south of the present city center, are among the best preserved temples of Ancient Greece. They show, above all, the remains of Akragas, one of the most important ancient Greek cities in Sicily. The Greek temples testify to the greatness, power and cultural prosperity of the Greek city of that time.
In 1997, UNESCO declared the Valley of the Temples a World Heritage Site because Akragas "was one of the greatest cities of antiquity in the Mediterranean area and is preserved in exceptional condition. Its magnificent series of Doric temples is one of the most outstanding monuments to Greek art and culture." [1]
In Germany, the ancient sites became known in the 18th century, especially through Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Italian Journey [2].
