Many beaches in the province of Ragusa, in southeastern Sicily, are sandy, and some have dunes behind them. In 2026 five towns here hold the Blue Flag: Ragusa, Scicli, Modica, Pozzallo and Ispica.
On this coast you can choose between Marina di Ragusa with its beach clubs, the long sand of Sampieri, the dunes of Santa Maria del Focallo and the shore at Punta Secca, where Inspector Montalbano's house stands. The 2026 Blue Flags went to Ragusa for Marina di Ragusa, Scicli for Sampieri-Pisciotto, Ispica for Santa Maria del Focallo, Pozzallo for Pietre Nere and Raganzino, and Modica for Maganuco and Marina di Modica.
The beach resort of Ragusa has a long sandy beach with several beach clubs and a 2026 Blue Flag. To the east begins the nature reserve at the mouth of the Irminio, protected since 1985: about 320 acres of shifting dunes and Mediterranean scrub that reach almost to Donnalucata. More on the Marina di Ragusa page.
This part of Scicli lies on the other side of the Irminio reserve and has wide beaches of fine golden sand. Scenes from several episodes of Inspector Montalbano were shot at the harbor and along the seafront of Donnalucata.
More than a mile of fine sand runs east of the village, with a 2026 Blue Flag for the Sampieri-Pisciotto stretch. At the east end the ruin of the Fornace Penna, a brick factory from 1912, stands above the sea; viewers of Inspector Montalbano know it as the Mànnara. More on the Sampieri Beach page.
Near Ispica a wide sandy beach runs along the coast for miles, backed by dunes with scrub, acacias and eucalyptus. It holds a 2026 Blue Flag and lies about 4 miles from Pozzallo.
In Punta Secca the white house that is Montalbano's home in the series stands on the little square by the Torre Scalambri watchtower, its terrace right on the sand. A few hundred yards away, in Caucana, the remains of a late Roman and Byzantine harbor settlement have survived. Both places have sandy beaches. More on the Punta Secca and Caucana page.
West of Punta Secca lies the sandy beach of Punta Braccetto, next to the Natura 2000 site Cava Randello, Passo Marinaro.
Vittoria's seaside village has wide sandy beaches with dunes behind them. On July 9 and 10, 1943, Allied troops landed here during Operation Husky.
Four Blue Flag stretches for 2026 lie close together: Pietre Nere and Raganzino in Pozzallo, Maganuco and Marina di Modica a few miles to the west, toward Modica.
There are holiday homes in Pozzallo, in Scicli and in Santa Croce Camerina near Punta Secca. From Pozzallo it is less than half a mile to Pietre Nere and about 4 miles to Santa Maria del Focallo.
